There she stood in the middle of the Camp, her face upturned towards the sky. Her eyes were shut, and when she opened them again, she had a wistful countenance. She watched as the rain descended, watched as it manifested itself within fat droplets, watched as they battered the ground with their moisture. She, too, was struck by the wetness that was rushing to the ground in a torrential manner, though she made no move to seek cover. To quite the contrary, part of her somewhat enjoyed getting wet--stepping out of her boundary of the meek, boring she-cat that summed her up on a regular basis.
Her eyes were staring at the surrounding area, though not much of it registered within her mind. Her thoughts touched upon nothing particular, instead simply skipping from one idea to another. She couldn't quite get settled, and she found it rather vexatious. She kept all of this within, though, so on the exterior, she appeared to still possess a quiet, calm disposition and presence.
The wind was blowing, throwing the raindrops about as it pleased, bending them to its own will. It was an icy duo, a couple set straight for chilling felines and the other creatures that still remained to the bone. It was succeeding as well, for a shiver ran down her spine, and her hair rose up on end. "It's so cold," she murmured to herself in a tone thick with melancholy, for melancholy was exactly what enveloped this season of leaf-bare. It was what took over and embedded its toll upon the moral and bodies of the felines within SkyClan. She and her fellow Clanmates tried their best to resist, but even the strongest fell prey to this feeling. It was indeed hunger and sickness that took lives, but most prominent of all was this idea of hopelessness, of never surviving, of giving up.
Finally coming to the more sensible side of her that was against rebellions of standing in the freezing rain, she turned and found sanctuary in a relatively large clump of dead heather that was old and brown and shriveled up. It did not do much for warmth, for heather did not exactly make the best type of insulation, though it was capable in sufficiently defending her from the frigid precipitation from up above. For even this little protection, she was grateful.
A groan rumbled in the back of her throat, and she let it out, sounding every inch like a young cat, which, in truth, she was. She heaved a sigh, trying to let out her impatience and anger at this leaf-bare in as muted a way as possible. She stared at the falling rain with a dull numbness that proclaimed surrendering to the elements. "Rain just makes everything look worse," she muttered. This was true, as while snow left behind a lovely white sheen that spread across the ground, rain simply soaked everything.
She threw her head down upon her paws and let loose another sigh.

"That may be true," came the liquid voice of the she-cat, "but underneath that layer of rain grows life. Without the ugly of life we can't see the beauty of it."
And so the voice was heard but not seen, for behind the sheets of mixed ugly was the blurred outline of the voice's owner. The outline grew closer to the bed of browned heather, slinking with an eloquence towards the adolescent that seemed to blend into the chilling rain in a manner of dominance. Situations such as this she'd endured, happily most likely not, but endured and survived nonetheless. Yet still she couldn't place why or how such strange occurrences like this happened; it was as if the skies could not decide whether leaf-bare should end or not. It couldn't decide whether or not to snow or to rain, and so it came out as slush. With slightly morbid amusement the feline compared it to her current situation.
The silver she-cat stepped through the curtain, all of her features and build revealed in the graying light. With easily relaxed and placid half-closed eyes she moved to place herself next to the seemingly troubled apprentice, her sleek coat remaining still as bead-lets of rain slid off strands of unruly fur. Mossy eyes, darkened from exhaustion, withheld the need to rest from her long travels. But now she was here, sitting next to Dreampaw, contemplating the ways of life and the uglies of weather.
With her thin tail placed nonchalantly to the side of her she relaxed, blinking slowly and releasing a quiet breath. Still she had not glanced to the apprentice since gliding into the small haven. She knew Dreampaw was an exceptionally bright she-cat and did not need full eye contact when speaking to another. In fact the feline had just arrived from her travels, and Dreampaw is the first clan member she's seen since her many moon-long disappearance. She knew that her deputy and medicine cat took care of the place well. Not an unsheathed claw in sight. All was well, it seemed, and now that SkyClan's leader has come back, the rhythm should be back in motion. Though no one else knows of her return but Dreampaw currently, who she has yet to see a reaction from, she will reveal herself in due time.
Having been traveling through many territories, many lands and strange places, she had gotten a larger respect for the small world they resided in. Or, from her experiences, a rather large world. She'd also gotten a small taste of the problems in it, and while she knew that she alone could not fix it, somehow she felt in debt. There was something she had to get over, but what exactly she did not know. And because of this constant wonderment the leader had returned thinned, her gaze darkened.
Northstar looked weaker, more fragile than before.

&Dreampaw
Her thoughts were flitting and flaunting themselves, criss-crossing and overlapping in to a silvery mental net too complex for her to want to sort through at present time. She wanted to be lightheaded, to have an airy aura about her--but she couldn't exactly handle it. What with this weather bringing her down, it felt as if the entire world had a chokehold on her, as if invisible chains encased her.
Dreampaw was awoken from this daze by the sound of a voice snaking out from curtains of the rain. Her ears twitched as a familiar chord within her was struck--she knew that voice. "Northstar," she choked out, for it seemed as if words had escaped her grasp. She was overjoyed to see SkyClan's leader returning back to the Clan, yet the cloud of gloom that threatened to send her spiraling down that dangerous path of leaf-bare's depression fought with her moment of light, of happiness, for dominance over her.
Her leader's words were wise, as they always were. "You're right," she said. Between the two of them, words always seemed to be few and could be mistaken as cautious and guarded; on Dreampaw's behalf, she wanted to appear as more mature toward her leader, conveying the message that she did not always need to fill up the air with noise.
She was aware of her leader's presence near her side. Sneaking a quick glance at Northstar, she looked the gracious leader up and down swiftly before looking back at the rain, calculating what was so different. Northstar did not look the same as before; she looked tired, exhausted, older. Dreampaw puzzled over this for a few moments before shaking it off. No. Northstar was the same Northstar--her leader, her role model.
"Where have you been, Northstar?" she asked suddenly. She knew that her question might come off as disrespectful, depending on how her leader interpreted it. There was part of Dreampaw that was genuinely curious, while another part of her secretly demanded an explanation for why SkyClan's first in command disappeared, a part of her that saw Northstar leaving as Northstar abandoning the Clan during leaf-bare, their time of need.

Glad to see that the little one had come to her senses the she-cat pulled her dark lips back in a fragile smile, feeling relieved that her clan had not completely abandoned her. Not that Dreampaw would be the first to do so, either, for she knew the apprentice's heart was large as her spirit was deep. Oh, StarClan, what ever has she done to deserve such a momentously beautiful clan such as SkyClan? The feline couldn't place it, and while she silently prayed to the heavens, her beloved came into mind once again.
She swiftly whisked that from her thoughts. There was no need to be distracted with such day dreams. Had Dreampaw asked her something?
Glancing over to the other the silver feline blinked slowly, reassessing herself and getting her thoughts in line. Why had she left? SkyClan's leader knew that an explanation would be needed at some time this day. She hoped that the rain would clear enough for her to call a clan meeting, where an official explanation would be due. However for this future warrior there was no official explanation needed, though Northstar felt inclined to give her a taste of the whole entrée of explorations.
"I've been traveling," she replied cautiously. "There was a task that I couldn't leave unhinged. I traveled past the Two Leg nests and into a land where they were in need of assistance. I provided to them as much as I could and managed to save a few of them." Northstar balked, her lungs filling with temporary silence as she recollected her events. "I need you to do something for me, Dreampaw."

With a flawless similarity to a kit witnessing his or her first snow, wonder sparkled within her eyes momentarily at the prospect of her leader traveling far and wide in order to aid someone else. To go to lengths such as that, to leave behind very prominent duties--whomever Northstar went to offer help must have been very important indeed. Curiosity now burned like a flame within her, but she retained it within her heart when she was addressed by Northstar once more.
Do something? Like a favor? "Of course, Northstar. Anything," was the immediate response that fell from her maw.
A flutter of emotions washed over Dreampaw at the same moment a rush of rain droplets flicked in to her face from a blunt gust of wind. Excitement at serving her leader ran through her mind, once again being battled by the depression that was leaf-bare.

Turning to face the other she nodded deeply, a fragile smile gracing her features as she thanked the little shecat with a momentous amount of gratitude and respect. There truly was no one else she wanted to do something like this for her but Dreampaw. It all seemed to be working out now, and the clan leader could only hope once her request was carried out it would continue to play out so smoothly. Only hope would pick her up now.
"Just before moonrise tonight I need you to come with me to the border of Sky Clan and Earth Clan boundaries. I will only be by your side until the border, but I cannot go with you into the territory. Unless you wish to bring another with you, you will be alone in crossing into Earth Clan territory. Wait for a patrol to come by before going in too deep, so as not to appear hostile, and ask for an escort. You are looking for a warrior named Eagledance. Find him and escort him to me as soon as possible. Do not answer any questions, do not ask any questions--only ask for Eagledance and that you mean no harm to Earth Clan's land."
Northstar's cord-like tail unraveled from her hips, settling out parallel to her body tightly. The tip of her silver tail twitched excitedly, her whole frame wracked with anticipation and nerve. It took her a moment to relax herself, and once she did her shoulders fell once more.
"Do you understand?"

Moonrise... Border between SkyClan and EarthClan... Cross over? Eagledance?
This certainly was a favor that was out of the ballpark of everything she had ever been asked to do. A slight tremor of fear whispered through her, but she ignored it--the excitement that ran through her was now pumping adrenaline through her veins. She resisted the urge to smile, to jump up and down at being recognized with such an important seeming task by her leader, whom she looked up to so very, very much.
She stared at the rain for a few fleeting moments in order to regain a steady, mature level to respond to Northstar. "Yes, Northstar, I understand," was what she answered, keeping her words to a bare minimum to show how exactly dead serious she was about this.
She couldn't help but ponder over the mysteriousness that Northstar was presenting all of this with. It worried Dreampaw, and the idea that perhaps her leader needed some rest before making any decisions slipped in to her mind, but she quickly dismissed saying it, as she knew that once Northstar's mind was made up, it was well made up.
"Northstar," the apprentice suddenly began, not sure exactly where she was going with her words, "you look... tired." Dreampaw trailed off here, unsure of what else to say. It was a simple statement, but she felt as if it somehow encompassed all of her worry for her leader in to those few chosen utterances.

There was a certain inner knowing that boiled from within the silver feline, a small pull at the lips revealing a delicate smile to express her knowledge. Without even a glance, twitch of the ear or tail, Northstar knew that the apprentice beside her was withholding a great need to let out her excitement about being chosen to do such a deed. She could smell the anxiety in the moist air, and smiled contently to herself at the thought of having such a controlled apprentice in her clan.
"Yes," she replied with a sigh, her guarded wall lowering. "My travels have made me weary, Dreampaw. What I've dealt with the past few moons has made me realize how small we really are." The leader balked, closing her eyes briefly and chuckling softly to herself. "I'll explain later tonight at our clan meeting."

b r a v e p a w A lone figure sat and stared up at the sky; two deep blue eyes desolate and forlorn. There was not a bit of happiness in the aura young Bravepaw had-- he felt alone and confused. Questions without answers swirled furiously around his mind, blocking out most of the sanity he had left. The rain that came down got his mood sour and unappealing, who would want to come and talk to him of all times? He avoided the other apprentices and ignored their advances... now they just didn't seek to try to start any conversation. Without his love Silverpaw to come and chat with him all the time he was nothing but a sack of fur.
Bravepaw's claws scored the ground and his eyes flickered to the medicine cats' den. There she was. Silverpaw had fallen ill and had stumbled in there earlier that morning; she still hadn't returned. He thought of visiting but, considering that strange bridge that had sprouted between them, decided against it.
His leader and another, he couldn't tell who, where sitting and chatting some way off. The tomcat just hung his head and blinked slowly, he watched the drops of water slip smoothly down his whiskers and flutter to the ground. There they met their brethren and formed a puddle... in this puddle he saw his reflection for the first time in a moon.
Bravepaw's eyes widened momentarily and real emotion came over his previous devoid mask; then it disappeared and he only released a husky sigh. There he saw a tom with rain flooding down his face and soaking his cheek fur. In the sapphire blue of his eyes... all the apprentice saw was bleak fortune. Bravepaw's eyes fluttered closed and he tried to block out the glow of his Clanmates. There was no point in leaving camp, all he could do was sit and wallow. The grey tom flicked his tail and narrowed the pupils of his eyes.
"... Another day..." He mumbled incoherently.

breezepaw As Breezepaw sat in front of the apprentice den, she scanned the camp with bright blue eyes that you could spot easily in the bleak grayness of leaf-bare. As she looked, she could see Bravepaw, a fellow apprentice. He looked pretty upset, and he had for a while. She decided to go over and see what was wrong.
She walked over with long legs, sat down next to him, a bit closer than usual because it was cold, and stayed silent, wondering if she should ask what's wrong or just try to be comforting and quiet. She decided on the second one. Maybe it was Silverpaw? She saw the way they looked at each other, Bravepaw more often than her though, and wondered if something had happened. She noticed that Silverpaw had been going out alot lately without Bravepaw. Hmmmm.... [/blockquote]

Somewhere in his mind he registered movement and his whiskers twitched, perhaps in greeting? He wasn't entirely sure. It took a little longer than usual to realize it was Breezepaw that had come up to see him. Bravepaw waited for the moment she would say something but the time never came; she only sat next to him. There was a comforting air about her that tried to ease its way into his heart and loosen him up.
Breezepaw. She was nice and rather curious, she went about without a care... On the plus side she was rather pretty. Why couldn't he love her instead? Why not? He was just ten moons old and he was broken inside...
Bravepaw's jaw opened and his ears flattened in concentration. I need to say something. The apprentice lifted himself slightly, his eyes opened and he turned his head to view her. "Hey," he murmured, almost inaudibly. How long had it been since he had used his voice?
It hurt.
Where was that once happy go lucky tom that joked and laughed? Gone forever...?

The hurt, the longing, the sadness of his voice, all summed up into a meloncholy meow of 'hey' was almost enough to make Breezepaw cry. She couldn't imagine how cats so young could love so much, or get their hearts shattered, just like that. As her azure eyes clouded up with sympathy, the silver-colored cat finally spoke.
"Oh, Bravepaw, what's wrong?"
She already knew the answer to this question, but she wanted to give Bravepaw a chance to share his feelings. If he wanted to, that is. shatteredheartsjustdon't H E A L[/blockquote]

"Oh, Bravepaw, what's wrong?"
As soon as those words escaped her lips, Bravepaw felt like crying. It took all his will power not to, but his expression quickly melted from his vague blankness to a more critical state. His brows crinkled and he felt the blood rush to his face, warming it. The tom's ears tilted down and his pupils widened, his deep blue orbs glimmering from unshed tears. "N-nng..." He mumbled out. Bravepaw felt his throat burn when he opened his mouth; the cold, bitter air stinging his tongue and nipping at his cheek fur. There was a second more before he let it all go, everything, everything he had held in all this time. From Inkpaw to Silverpaw's strange distances, and finally Eagledance's appearance. The apprentice bowed his head and leaned to the side so that he rested against her, recoiling like a kit would to his mother. Somewhere, amongst his agony, he knew that he had to hide his face from her.
"I.. I..." He choked out, "D-don't know... what... to do... a-anymore."

Breezepaw's blue-green eyes met with Bravepaw's for a moment before he turned away from her. She knew this was about Silverpaw.
"Bravepaw, don't be sad, please," the white she-cat whispered, her muzzle just brushing his ear. "I know she is distant right now, but maybe you will end up with her. And even...even if you don't..." Breezepaw trailed off, not because she didn't know what to say, but because she herself felt sad for Bravepaw. "Even if you don't end up with Silverpaw, you have to want her to be happy, no matter what."

Wait, it's all that I can take And e v e r y single day A part of my soul is fading But now by letting go somehow Unshackled and unbound I'm calling out y o u r name I'm fading So SAVE ME From what I've become
Bravepaw lifted his bowed head, his eyes were soulless and as hard as flint when he gazed at her. The deep blue glossed over and he struggled to stand up, before digging his claws into the soggy ground and looking up at the sky; the tom felt the rain patter against his face. "It's all I can take," He muttered, shaking. "I don't... want to mess around with her anymore." He was speaking to himself more than the she-cat he stood in front of, his voice was soft with building anger. The agonizing moment he had before was being smothered by stronger feelings. "I... I'm letting go of her...! I don't want to understand her anymore!" He spat, vision blurring as he fought to control his fury. "She mustn't love me if she's doing this! By pushing everyone away, she's also pushing whatever problems she has onto the cats that care about her!" He gritted his teeth, shredding the ground below, covering his paws in sloppy mud. "If-if she has the audacity to do that, then she doesn't deserve to be padded after! Not by me!!" His words were harsh, pointed, but as each one came out he felt pinches at his heart. Bravepaw didn't want to be with Silverpaw anymore. She was stupid now that his pain took away the aura he had given her. She was just a bubbly she-cat hiding everything she thought-- even from him. When they would play and she'd look upset, she'd never explain why or what exactly caused her to be. When she was in pain, she never told where. He was sick of it. Sick of her. He had his whole life spread out in front of him, and he wasn't going to spend it waiting at the bottom, waiting for the time she'd slip and fall. She had no one else to catch her now. She was on her own, to handle whatever had caused her to drift so far away. Bravepaw was just about ready to become a warrior, and so was she. Their paths were no longer connected. Silverpaw had been severing the bond between them, but it was Bravepaw that had sliced it off, breaking it completely. He wouldn't even have to tell her. The tomcat turned his head to look back at the soaked she-cat behind him. He searched her eyes, "If I can't even love myself, Breezepaw, what made me think I could love someone else?" He asked weakly, his sudden amount of strength ebbing at a threatening pace. Within time, he would probably loose conscience. He didn't even remember how long he had sat underneath the rain brooding. "Save me please," he murmured. It's all over... everything. I'm free.
