Swanfeather curled her feathery tail around the four bundles of fur tucked into her belly. Her ears flattened in joy and she leaned forward to gently rasp her tongue over each little scrap. Birth wasn't so painful if you put your mind in the right perspective. The queen let out an exhausted sigh and looked up to see Hawkclaw's shadow timidly fidgeting on the outside of the nursery. "Little kits, meet your father," She breathed to them before lifting her head to call for her mate. "Hawkclaw, you can come in now," She meowed, her voice tainted with that of amusement. He needn't worry so much, she was absolutely fine.
She turned her bright green eyes to gaze upon her kin once more, her heart swelling with warmth. She knew the names of the first two, Hawkclaw would supply the next. Her mate's pelt was a mixture of black and white and her own was completely white. So the lengthening of colors for her kits was pretty short. Their kits were mainly of the colors gray, black, white, and one seemed to have skipped over her parents' fur colors and went straight toward Swanfeather's great kin. She was orange-red. Odd one out? Hopefully no one of SkyClan or EarthClan would accuse her of anything... She was proud of her kits.
The gray and white tom was named Ashkit and the orange-red she-cat was named Cherrykit. Now the other two were all left up to their father. Hawkclaw padded swiftly and delicately toward the ivory glow of his mate, and tipped his head down to peer at the kits below. Swanfeather saw his eyes widen and then a deep, throaty purr erupted from the tom. "They're gorgeous," he commented, his expression filled with affection.
"Of course they are!" Swanfeather replied, her eyes dancing.
Hawkclaw flicked his tail and smiled, "As if they'd be anything else."
There was a pause where they admired. "I've named these two already," the queen ran her salmon pink tongue over the first two of her litter. Hawkclaw's ears pricked forward in interest. "This is Cherrykit," she nosed the orange-red kit, "And this is Ashkit."
Ashkit's fur was a soft gray, but his muzzle and underbelly were a fresh ivory. Like untainted snow that fell from the sky. There was a second more, and then Ashkit let out a tiny sneeze. His parents purred. The little tom's eyes abruptly opened and they both heard him inhale.
"Whoa!" He squeaked. Swanfeather leaned forward and nuzzled his tiny white muzzle. Ashkit turned and gazed upon his mother for the first time. He had large teal eyes and they shown with interest and curiosity, glowing against the dim light of the nursery. "I-I decided it was time to look around," He mewed, his kit-fur fluffed up in excitement as he leaned into his mother.
Hawkclaw let out a low purr, "Welcome to SkyClan, Ashkit."
Beside him, his orange-red sister let out a mrrow. Her eyes were still closed. Swanfeather knew each kit would open their eyes when they saw fit. "... Ashkit? What's wrong?" Cherrykit asked drowsily, her voice high and squeaky. Her fur had splotches of ginger, white, and black-- all in a pretty pattern but not that of a calico, however. She looked just like Swanfeather's great kin; Cherrykit was just a miniature copy.
"Cherrykit, open your eyes!" He trilled.
Cherrykit only sniffled, resting her head against Swanfeather's side again. "I'll open them when I want..." She mumbled, drifting to sleep. Her brother only released a hmph in reply.
Swanfeather gently nosed Ashkit and gave him a good lick between his ears. Her son began to purr; and it was a tiny one at that! She turned her green gaze to her mate and together they watched as their kits nestled into her underbelly once again.
"I'll need to think of names for the other two," Hawkclaw murmured.
Swanfeather nodded, and then both of the new parents shared a loving glance. These kits had strengthened their bond even more.
